Twilight: credit where credit is due
Let me begin this post by saying that until recently I had never felt the urge to watch Twilight, the massively-popular vampire saga aimed at teenage girls with a crush on bad boys. It isn’t like I hated the idea, it was just that, like a lot of people, I had had enough of vampires. I didn’t need to see more of them. If Twilight hadn’t been on the TV last night then there is no doubt in my mind that I would still be clueless and that is how it would remain for a long time to come.
But Twilight was on the TV last night. So, to finally get it out of the way and see once and for all what I had been ’missing'I did it. And here is what I have concluded.
If I was the kind of girl who had spent her childhood staring at semi-naked boys, I’d definitely have liked Twilight from the out-set
It isn’t anywhere near as bad as everyone says, or, if it is, it is only as bad as a number of other films. This may just be my opinion because I have come under the film’s spell, or it may be because actually, somewhere in there is a great film trying to get out.
Because one thing is sure. If I was the kind of girl who had spent her childhood staring at semi-naked boys, I’d definitely have liked Twilight from the out-set. Robert Pattinson is in it – need I say more? – and there are tons more hunks besides. Even if I hadn’t been into man-watching from a young age then I would probably have fallen for the sexy vulnerability of Bella, it has to be said. And really, what is the mark of a good film? You could say that it is one which people identify with, and on that count this film gets 10 out of 10 every time.
My problem is that I’d prefer to surf online for a garmin running watch – one of the best out there, and I know because I run a lot – or go jogging out in a thunderstorm. I have just always been that kind of a chick. Half tom-boy, half fitness freak (and yes, I did love all the running about in Twilight. I have to say that got me hooked!).
So now I am going to stop all the pessimism as soon as I hear someone talking about the world’s favourite vampire film. Instead, I’ll just remember that there is a place for everything, even if it is a bit soppy!
