Comeback or stay away?

Is modern music really so rubbish that defunct bands of the 1990s think they can do any better? Actually, don’t answer that. With a chart dominated by karaoke singers and people playing what sound like Game Boys, I’d probably welcome a string quartet on the Top 40 countdown! As if it wasn’t bad enough that Steps have decided to reform, now we have the news that The Stone Roses are planning a series of comeback concerts. But wait a minute, I hear you cry, surely it’s great news that The Stone Roses, one of the most influential bands of all time, are going to be playing live again? Just think about that for a moment; how many comebacks have ever lived up to expectation? I’d rather remember the Roses as they were – especially when you consider how awful Ian Brown’s solo gigs have been in the intervening years!

In fact, the only good musical news this week was about a band splitting up. After over a decade of caterwauling and standing up from stools, Westlife have decided to call it a day. To be honest, I hadn’t actually noticed they were still around. Westlife were one of those bands that remind me of office window cleaning – all fine while it goes on in the background but no-one would really notice if it didn’t happen one week…

I’ve been to a fair few comeback or reunion concerts and most of them were a sore disappointment. The only ones I considered a success were those where I had never seen the band live first time around, The Who and Pink Floyd, for example. If I follow those rules when it comes to the two musical reunions announced this week, I should steer clear of Madchester and head for the first Steps concert I can find. Altogether now, “5,6,7,8…”
